SUBJECT :-MICROBIOLOGY

PLACEMENT: -II YEAR BSC NSG

TOTAL THEORY HOURS: 60 Hrs.

AIMS:

At the end of the course the students will be able to understand and apply the principles of microbiology in the medical surgical procedures carried out in the field.

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the course students are able to :

Ø      Appreciate the concept and scope of microbiology in nursing

Ø      Describe the nature, type and morphological structure of micro organisms.

Ø      Discuss the methods of controlling and destroying microbes.

Ø      Describe transmission of pathogenic organisms and its control.

Ø      Analyse body's reaction to infection in relation to immune system.

Ø      Apply the principles of microbiology in pathological investigations.

Ø      Apply universal safety precautions.

Ø      Explain the principles of hospital infection.

UNIT III. MICRO ORGANISMS IN THE HUMAN BODY                                               (10 Hrs)

Ø      Koch's Postulates

Ø      Types of host parasite relationship (Incl. normal flora)

Ø      Reaction of the body to infections.

Ø      Normal immune mechanisms and immunity

UNIT IV. CONTROL OF MICROORGANISMS                                                    (12Hrs)

Ø      Definitions of terms in regard to control

Ø      Control/destruction of micro organisms

Ø      Different method : Mechanical methods, physical and chemical methods including pasteurisation, fumigation and incineration.

Ø      Various methods of sterilisation

Ø      Common disinfectants and antiseptics

Ø      Control of microorganism s in the body.

Ø      Anti microbial agents and drug resistance.

Ø      Antibiotic sensitivity test.

Ø      Control of microorganisms in hospital

Ø      Cross infection (Nosocomial infection)

Ø      Sources & prevention

Ø      Medical and surgical asepsis

Ø      Modern strategies infection control committee and the nurse.

UNIT V. STUDY OF PATHOGENIC MICRO ORGANISMS                                 (24 Hrs)

Ø      Patho genicity of microorganisms

Ø      Study of pathogenic bacteria: (includes morphology" diseases, causes, transmission and control) .
